Challenging Stereotypes in Careers

Manor Croft Academy has been challenging stereotypes in careers ahead of their yearly careers week, due to kick off in March.

Lee from the Talent foundry hosted an NHS nursing workshop to 32 students, most of which were male, in the hopes of tackling the belief that “nursing is for girls”. Students enjoyed the competitive spin on the workshop which gave great insight into the daily life of a nurse in the NHS and allowed them to speak virtually to a real NHS nurse.

Another event saw 7 Manor Croft girls visiting the Brunell Construction centre in Huddersfield to attend their yearly “Women in construction” event. The girls took part in many activities such as circuit building, bridge construction with spaghetti and marshmallows, and brick laying. Phoebe T and Cara W took the reins and were not afraid to get their hands dirty during a brick wall building contest. Their great team work caught the attention of the Kirklees college staff who awarded them each with a £10 amazon voucher for their showcase of “natural skill”. Hopefully the trip inspires the girls to smash gender stereotypes in the future, and be big names in construction!
