Students across the school have been involved in the UK Mathematics Trust Challenges over the past year. They are designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Mathematical Challenges are designed to make students think.
On 2nd February 2021, our students in 11P1, 10P1 and 9P1 took part in the Intermediate Challenge. Due to lockdown, these students were the first to complete the papers on the online platform, but still excelled! We achieved 17 certificates overall with Silver Certificates and Best in Year for Cameron E (Y11) and Stanislaw C (Y10).
Year 9 student, James A achieved a phenomenal score of 79, gaining him the title of Best in School alongside his Silver Certificate, and an invitation to the Grey Kangaroo Challenge! Entry to this competition is by invitation only, and we are so proud that James represented us at this level!
Our Year 7 and 8 students then took on the Junior Maths Challenge on 28th April. We got an astonishing 28 certificates across 7P1, 7Q1, 8P1 and 8Q1, with 7 of these at Silver level! Topping the charts in Year 8 were Alfie A, Isobel G and Kacey M with Silver Certificates and a score of 58. The overall crown was taken by Haris M in Year 7 who achieved an amazing 67 points and a Silver Certificate for Best in School!
Competing these challenges is difficult and requires so much resilience on top of great maths skills. We are so proud of all the students who took part and gave it their all. We’ll continue doing these challenges each year… so next time, let’s go for Gold!
